COVID-19 AEMT Checklist

Kentucky Board of EMS (KBEMS) Emergency Orders as specified in SB 150 and Executive Order 2020-243. The intent of the emergency Orders is to alleviate the regulatory conflicts identified in existing regulations in relation to mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in Kentucky.

Section A: All AEMT Applicants must submit the following items:

  • Must NOT have been found guilty of, entered a guilty plea, or Alford plea to a felony offense or have completed a diversion program for a felony offense or been subjected to discipline that would prevent certification at the time of application.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • A completed AEMT Application through your KEMSIS account.
  • If you have ever been certified/licensed by the Kentucky Board of EMS, you can submit a background check through the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC). AOC background check MUST be less than 6 months old at the time of certification. 
    • AOC can be access here http://courts.ky.gov/aoc/criminalrecordreports/Pages/default.aspxSPECIAL NOTE: AOC background check must be less than 30 days old at the time of application for Emergency Reinstatement from April 10, 2020 through June 8, 2020. 
    • KBEMS ONLY uses CastleBranch for any new/initial applicant in Kentucky. You must link directly to the KBEMS specific CastleBranch Background Check from the KBEMS website or the link is provided below. CastleBranch background check MUST be less than 6 months old at the time of application. CastleBranch can be accessed here https://portal.castlebranch.com/kd28.

Section B: Initial-Applicants applying for the first time from a Kentucky approved course must submit the items from Section A and Section B.

  • Proof of NREMT or provisional certification
  • Proof of KBEMS approved AEMT certification exam
    • KBEMS approved AEMT course information (TEI name and course number)
  • Fees submitted $60.00 Total ($50.00 Initial Certification Fee + $10.00 Application Fee)

Section C: Temporary- Applicants applying for temporary status must submit the items from Sections A and C (Note: Course completion date must be within 24 months prior to the date of application submission.)

  • Proof of state license or NREMT certification OR
  • Proof of completion of a KBEMS approved AEMT course
  • Fees submitted $185.00 Total ($125.00 Temporary Fee + $50.00 Certification Fee + $10.00 Application Fee)

Section D: Reciprocity- Applicants applying for reciprocity must submit the items from Section A and Section D (Note: Expired certification must be within the last 20 years from the date of application submission.)

  • Proof of current or past certification (State, NREMT, or provisional)
  • Fees submitted $185.00 Total ( $125.00 Reciprocity Fee + $50.00 Certification Fee+ $10.00 Application Fee)

Section E: Reinstatement-Applicants applying for reinstatement whose certification has lapsed for a period not exceeding three (3) years, must submit the items from Section A and Section E

  • Proof of previous KY AEMT certification
  • Proof of current certification at the AEMT level or higher with the National Registry of EMT’s, Or Current KBEMS approved CPR certification
  • Written evidence of completion of current HIV/AIDS training required by KRS 311A.110
  • Written evidence of completion of current Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma as required by KRS 311A.127
  • Evidence of additional successful completion within twelve (12) months preceding their application for reinstatement of the AEMT
  • Completion of the AEMT continuing education requirement of forty-eight (48) total instructional hours. The forty-eight (48) instructional hours shall be composed of twelve (12) elective hours in subject areas chosen by the AEMT and thirty-six (36) hours that include the following minimum contact hours for the following subject areas:

Twelve (12) hours in airway, breathing, and cardiology, with a minimum of one (1) hour in each topic;

Six (6) hours in medical emergencies, excluding cardiology;

Five (5) hours in trauma;

Six (6) hours in obstetrics;

Six (6) hours in pediatrics; and

One (1) hour in disaster management.

  • The twelve (12) elective hours required for an AEMT to recertify shall not include more than four (4) hours in a single category in the list provided
  • Fees submitted $260.00 ($150.00 Reinstatement Fee + $50.00 Certification Fee + $10.00 Application Fee + $50.00 Late Fee).
