Ground Agency Driver Background Requirements

Kentucky Driver History Records Website

Agencies may obtain Driving History Records for Kentucky drivers through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. This website allows anyone to request Driving History Records for Kentucky drivers. Driver status, license expiration, driving restrictions, and traffic violations will be contained on the record. A three-year driving record is a public record in accordance with KRS 186.018. A Kentucky three-year driving record does not contain accident information or any of the driver's personal information such as address, sex, date of birth, and social security number. The cost of a Kentucky Driving History Record is $3.00 per record.

Agency Driver Educational Requirements

Staff members of volunteers who operate a vehicle as part of their job duties must:

  • Be at least Eighteen (18) Years of Age
  • Hold a valid Driver's License
  • Complete an initial drivers training and education program that is a minimum of eight (8) hours long.
  • Complete refresher driver's training and education program at least once every two (2) years, which is a minimum of four (4) hours in duration

Note: If staff member is a Patient Care Provider ONLY, no driver training is required. However, documentation must be kept in the personnel file.

Initial Driver Training Requirements:

Initial Driver Training Programs may be developed by the provider or provided for the provider in conjunction with another agency or organization.

Courses must include and maintain documentation of:

  • Review of driving a vehicle under emergency conditions
  • Review of Kentucky Revised Statutes regarding operation of emergency vehicles
  • Performing forward and back-up driving maneuvers in a controlled situation, such as in an obstacle course designed specifically for this purpose
  • Review of defensive driving techniques and procedures with hands-on experience or exposure by visual aids, such as video tapes, slides, or planned demonstrations.
  • Course must be at least eight (8) hours in length

Refresher Driver Training Requirements

Refresher Driver Training Programs may be developed by the provider or provided for the provider in conjunction with another agency or organization. Refresher programs must be completed every two (2) years.

Courses must include and maintain documentation of:

  • A review of driving a vehicle under emergency conditions
  • A review of Kentucky Revised Statutes regarding operation of emergency vehicles
  • A review of forward and back-up driving maneuvers in a controlled situation, such as in an obstacle course designed specifically for this purpose
  • A review of defensive driving techniques and procedures by with hands-on experience or exposure by visual aids, such as videotapes, slides, or planned demonstrations.
  • Course must be at least four (4) hours in length
