Recertification

In applying for recertification, Kentucky certified EMTs agree to comply with all recertification requirements, rules and regulations of the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services.  The EMT recertification applicant bears the burden of demonstrating and maintaining compliance at all times. 

The EMT applying for recertification must maintain proof of the following:

  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR card
  • Must not have been found guilty of, entered a guilty plea, or Alford Plea to a felony offense or have completed a diversion program for a felony offense
  • Must not have been subjected to discipline that would prevent re-certification at the time of application

Continuing Education Requirements:

  • Maintain evidence of either current registration by the NREMT as an EMT OR

        OR

  • Successful completion of the "EMT Basic Minimum Continuing Education Requirement" that includes twenty-four (24) structured contact hours of continuing education in the following subjects:
    • One (1) hour in Disaster Management or Mass Casualty Incidents
    • Two (2) Airway Management
    • Three (3) Patient Assessment
    • Four (4) Medical or Behavioral Emergencies
    • Four (4) Trauma
    • Two (2) Obstetrics, Gynecology, or Infants and Children
    • Eight (8) Elective Hours
    • This shall be validated by the instructor, medical director, training officer, course coordinator, or provider of the continuing education offering; OR Medical Director, service director, or training officer of the EMT's Ambulance Service, first response agency, fire department, rescue squad or other medical employer.

    Your application for renewal shall be denied if:

    • Prior to the certification expiration date the applicant has not met the applicable requirements of this section; or,
    • The applicant has been subjected to disciplinary action that prevents recertification at the time of application.

    Military Extension

    • A certified EMT, in good standing, who is a member of the National Guard or a military reserve unit and is called to active duty by presidential order may be given a one year extension following release from active duty to meet the applicable requirements for recertifcation listed in this regulation.  The EMT seeking recertification shall submit a written request for this extension within 60 days of release from active duty.
